The Skills Network, a leading UK online education provider, has launched a government-funded Skills Bootcamp in Early Years for residents in the Greater London area
The Skills Network, a leading UK online education provider, has launched a government-funded Skills Bootcamp in Early Years Educator for residents in the Greater London area, including Bromley, Lewisham, Bexley, Croydon, and Sutton. This initiative, funded by the Greater London Authority, offers both a six-week standard course and a more intensive four-week option. The program is primarily delivered online, supplemented by five hours of in-person tuition at a central location, with classes scheduled from 9:15 am to 2:45 pm.
The bootcamp aims to address local employment needs by equipping participants with sector-specific skills in four key areas:
• Child development
• Health and well-being in early years settings
• Safeguarding and child protection
• Equality, diversity, and inclusion
Throughout the course, learners receive support from a learning support advisor who oversees group sessions and online assessments. Upon completion, participants are prepared to begin working in unqualified positions within local nurseries, preschools, or reception class settings, thereby reducing the typical length of study time.
Wendy Dodson, Partnerships Director Skills Bootcamps at The Skills Network, stated:
“We are dedicated to supporting individuals in the Greater London area who are eager to pursue a career in early years education. Our four-week intensive and six-week courses provide greater flexibility for our learners and allow them to choose a route that works around their commitments.”

Supporting Left-Handed Children in EYFS
Approximately 1 in 10 people are left-handed, yet many of the youngest left-handed children in early years settings encounter unnecessary challenges simply because the world around them is designed for right-handed individuals.
We can address this issue in three key areas: identification, action, and ongoing support. When working with young children, it’s essential to recognize the developmental timeline and characteristics of left-handedness. Babies are typically not yet left- or right-handed, using both hands equally and often switching between them. At this stage, they will naturally use the hand that is closest to the object they want to grasp. As Julian Grenier notes, the world is set up for right-handed people, which can unintentionally hinder the development of left-handed children. Most children begin to establish a dominant hand between the ages of 18 months and 5 years. Therefore, careful observation during this period is crucial.
Some children may not fully establish their dominant hand until they are around five years old, so it’s important to regularly revisit your observations and adapt accordingly.
For left-handed children, the challenges of navigating a world designed for right-handed people can sometimes lead to frustration. Without active recognition and support, they may feel clumsy or struggle with tasks like using pencils, scissors, or cutlery, which could affect their confidence.
While there is no national data comparing the outcomes of left- and right-handed children, schools and early years settings can track this internally through tools like the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile. This will help ensure that left-handed children are receiving the tailored support they need.
The EYFS Framework emphasizes the importance of ensuring every child is included and supported. Thankfully, outdated practices like forcing left-handed children to use their right hand have largely been abandoned in early years settings.
However, supporting left-handed children goes beyond simply accepting their handedness; it’s about actively recognizing their unique needs and helping them thrive in a right-handed world. By implementing targeted strategies and maintaining an ongoing commitment to support, we can ensure that left-handed children are not just accommodated, but empowered to reach their full potential. It’s our responsibility to champion their development in the EYFS.
